Studio Build?

My husband and I have been talking about redoing the middle bay in our three-car garage for my craft space. Greg has been talking to our contractor friend and, of course, he sprung it on me one day before he was due to come. Yowza! Day 1 Courtney and I started on moving everything from the middle bay to the one side of the garage in PILES. The room had to be completely EMPTY. By lunch time, we were worn out. Greg suggested asking our high school girl, Amanda, to come help to get some new help in and keep up going. Thank goodness we did! I always fail to get a before picture… Day 2 First Day of Construction! The wall was built and insulation was put in. They were able to put a space for a window in. (So no one can sneak up on me!) And then, of course, the door frame! Courtney had been looking on Facebook Marketplace off and on for older kitchen cabinet. She found some in Quincy which is about half an hour away from us. I had a class that night in my private group so I could not go to Quincy. Greg needed to get a few things like lights, outlets, and more wiring so Greg and Courtney headed to Quincy with the truck and trailer. Day 3 Second Day of Construction! They got the rest of the insulation put in, the wiring for outlets, and the air conditioner put back in! Day 4 We have floor! Oh, and I didn’t say much about my door. I’m not sure if I’m 100% satisfied with it so we’ll see! Day 5 Trying to put these cabinets together was a HUGE puzzle. It took awhile but we finally got it to where we were happy with it. Here is a little Facebook Live tour of the studio! Day 6 These countertops are one of my favorite things in here! The wood has been sitting in one of your barns for years. It actually came from my husband’s grandparents. They had a barn that was taken down by a twister. Boy, am I glad it was kept now! All it needed was a good sanding and some poly, and it was perfect! Now it’s time to move in and find everything its own place! I’ll keep you updated though! How To Recycle Old Windows

Do you have old windows laying around like I do and can’t decide what to do with them all! You will be glad you stopped by today because I am going to show you how to use furniture transfers to recycle old windows! Living on the farm has many perks as well as many challenges. When the new calves need to be feed that means we do not sleep as much. To me, that is a challenge. I love my sleep! The perk of living on a farm is seeing God’s beauty all around me every day as well as being married to the farmer. Another great perk is all the “old” things we have laying around for that “just in case we need it” a moment to happen! However, I am thankful for those items because I found the perfect thing from a pile in the barn that I can not wait to craft with you. I am going to teach you how to repurpose an old window. How to Recycle Old Windows for Art This is going to blow your mind. You can turn an old window into a beautifully hung portrait. The old wood on the glass window makes for the perfect frame for a beautiful furniture transfer. I just love the natural wood around the edges or you can even paint them the color of your choice. Unfortunately, the white barn transfer has very limited stock but you can find some great vintage portraits or even some nautical lighthouses to use! I found the transfer I truly LOVED. We live on a farm in a farmhouse with a barn so very fitting. The possibilities are endless when using furniture transfers to recycle old windows. You too can do this with the ones you have laying around your home or you find thrifting. Supplies Needed to Repurpose an Old Window: Old Window Frames Furniture Transfers Scissors Squeegee Steps: Clean the window very well with some window cleaner and a paper towel. Roll out your transfer and cut to appropriate size as well as omitting anything in the print you do not want to use. This one came in three separate pieces. Start from the bottom with the first piece. Line up the bottom and confirm that it fits the space you are trying to fill. Trim off off any edges on all sides that need a quick trim. Take the backing off the transfer slowly. Press down firmly and use a squeezy to remove any bubbles. Once pressed down and secure then pull off the top clear protective layer. Do this slowly and as you pull keep rubbing down the transfer as you pull the clear layer off. Repeat the same steps to apply the next two sections. Where to get old windows? If you do not live on a farm like me and are not blessed with tons of old farmhouse windows then you will likely find tons of windows at the following places: Antique Stores Thrift Stores Landfills Dumps Construction sites (but please ask before taking!) Ways to recycle old windows I just shared with you one amazing way to recycle old windows but the possibilities are endless. Here are a few of my favorite ways I have seen others decorate: Use it as a large photo frame or like a collage frame Add scrapbook paper to the back and use a decorative decor propped on a table. Set it in the garden and let vines grown around it. If my daugther was still small it would make the perfect bow holder with added wire. Add hooks to the wood fram for a coat hanger for an entryway There is so much you can do with an old window to add some flair and decor to your home. Remember to just be creative and do not be scared to try something new. Just pin this How To Recycle Old Windows tutorial below to find the instructions later!

Thrift Store Shopping

Let’s Go Thrifting! This has been a rare occasion for me in the last few years!  I’ve just been too busy.  I love to go, but I truly don’t need anything…like at all!  But I always find things…or they find me.  For this trip, I had actually taken a few boxes of “stuff” to get rid of.  So there’s that. This was in March of this year…right before everything shut down for Co-Vid. I am so glad we got to go.  Like I said, it was two birds one stone kinda trip, lol, but I’ll take what I can get. For the last ten years or so, furniture has been my main thing to shop for at these stores.  Unfortunately, their prices are a little bit high.  I used to get some pretty good deals, but now they know all the flippers want those pieces, so they upped their prices.  They’ve been onto us for quite some time now. I had so much fun!  And took a ton of pictures along the way!  I kept posting to Facebook, and people kept wanting to know where I was and how much the prices were!  It felt so good to be out and browsing!  When I had my store, I barely had time to breathe, let alone shop thrift stores, so this felt pretty awesome! We started at Goodwill.  Another thing I usually look for is small wood items that would be easy to sand and repaint to give them a new life—shelves, boxes, jewelry boxes, etc.  I have quite a few of each of these items in my stashes currently, so I definitely didn’t need any more this particular day. These are some of the wood “smalls” that I came across… These almost look like Hobby Lobby rejects if you ask me?  Pretty cool to be in a Goodwill, but they were also not on the cheap side, lol. I snapped a picture of this because…how cool would it be in a kid’s bedroom decorated with vintage sports memorabilia!  So cute!  But that’s how I roll.  I see one piece and want to decorate a whole room around it and run with them! I would have grabbed this clock, but it was $9.99, and I have plenty, so I left it behind. But wouldn’t it have been adorable if you took the brass piece off and spray painted it oil rubbed bronze and then painted the rest of the clock in a creamy off white with some brown antiquing? There were some pretty cool prints.  I think these would have been awesome to put in a nice big black frame.  And obviously they had some pretty cute kids clothes and some cool toys. We also hit up The Crossing Thrift Store on our way out of town. If I didn’t already have a bazillion shelves, I would have snagged this one.  But I stayed strong. I wasn’t strong enough, however, to leave this one behind.  I’m thinking a good scrubbing will do it wonders.  And I plan to use it when I redo our bathroom. Clocks are one of my weaknesses.  I love this one, but seriously?  At $24.99, it was a little too rich for my blood. I loved this table setting and didn’t think $29.99 was terrible, but I just didn’t need it.  If it had been more of an off white though, I probably would have grabbed it to redecorate my built-in hutch.  It was a narrow escape. I thought these glasses were pretty cool! There’s never a shortage of picture frames or glassware! These two pieces are pretty cool.  I don’t think I brought either one of them home with me, though! While not necessarily my style, they would be cool in a cabin theme or man cave! Oh, my word!  If I had been pulling my trailer, this baby would have been coming home with me!  It was huge!  So many storage possibilities!  I’m getting ready to upgrade my garage area into a “studio” and wouldn’t this have been perfect for a gorgeous storage piece in there??? I’ll stop there.  But going through all these pictures has me itching to go again!!!  What are your favorite things to look for at thrift stores?

Kermit Bookshelf

I wish I could take total credit for this beauty, but in truth, I am not a carpenter.  I barely have the time to do the projects that I know how to do.  My tiny brain has very little room left for learnings.  That being said, “I have a guy”, lol.  He is amazing and rarely thinks my ideas are crazy anymore. Anywho…just in case you can’t tell, the back to the bookcase is an actual oak headboard.  I had the carpenter add the shelves/bookcase part and wheels.  The wheels are a huge plus since this thing weighs a ton.  It is a whole lotta wood so why wouldn’t it be? It was never my intention to paint this beauty green.  I am a huge fan of green, especially this shade, it just wasn’t the first color to cross my mind. I was originally thinking white, with maybe some distressing and antiquing.  I had even prepped it to be painted white.  But… I wasn’t completely sold on it. Red briefly crossed my mind.  Then black and distressed.  Several ideas were thrown at me from my followers.   My sweet, sweet friend Ana suggested green.  Hmmmmmm.  That kind of lit me up!  But did see if I have enough green on hand? Of course, I didn’t.  So I kind of had to make a custom color.  I love that kind of old vintage green…know what I mean? That was the look I was going for! This custom concoction started with ‘Kudzu’ by Dixie Belle.  I only had one container of it and I just knew that would not be enough to finish this beast.  So…I took the ‘Kudzu’ and added a bunch of things to it.  I am not sure if this is the complete list, but I think so. I had my heart set on ‘Kudzu’, so I poured 8 ounces of the Kudzu, 8 ounces of ‘Frog Green’ by Dixie Belle and a few more ounces of the”Frog Green’ and some ‘Greystone’ from Miss Lillian’s and some ‘Moss Green’ from Miss Lillian’s and some ‘French Roast’ from Miss Lillian’s and ‘Lichen’ by Fusion Paint. LOL. I guess it would be safe to say it’s a custom color but the closest would be ‘Kudzu’ by Dixie Belle ? After giving it two coats of paint, it was all marrying together very well!  The headboard to the shelves.  And mixture of paint colors!  Folks, I think we have a winner! I added some antiquing glaze also.  Did you see that detail on the headboard? (swoon)  I started with a black walnut glaze and that just wasn’t doing it for me so I ended up using a dark brown, ‘Truffle’ by Miss Lillian’s.  In case you can’t tell, I fell head over heels in love with this piece.  Especially after hubby came out and looked at it and said he liked it too!  All I had to do was figure out what piece or pieces I would have to get rid of to make it fit in my house! DIY Pet Canvas

I ❤ my fur babies. Now that my kids are grown up, and one is out of the house, and the other wants to get out of the house, my fur babies have now taken over the house. And I’m not ashamed. To prepare (a week or two before), I had Courtney print out pictures on photo paper on my computer at home. I had to have her edit the images over to black and white for the look I wanted. If you don’t have a printer at home, there are sites like Walmart or Walgreens that can print and mail to you at home. First, I grabbed my canvas, and I picked my favorite pictures of them I wanted. I had to keep the pictures pretty fair; I couldn’t showcase one dog more than the other! I’m pretty lucky I have one with all three dogs in it! Then, I had to cut down pictures using my paper trimmer as they had white on the edges. When I had that done, I grabbed my canvas. On this project, I used 12×12 canvas. Then, I took Dixie Belle’s Caviar Paint and painted the sides and outsides of the canvas. The pictures would cover the rest of the canvas. On the pictures, I took my Ranger Tim Holtz Paint Dabber in black soot and trimmed the photos with it to give it a more finished and pristine look. Then I started to mod podge each photo on. For the center of the canvas, I used a scrap piece of scrapbook paper and mod podged it on. Next, I grabbed a sturdy piece of paper like card stock and took one of my alphabet stamp sets and StazOn stamp pads and stamped Sadie, Stella, Twinkie on the paper. (Y’all can see my mistake! I accidentally used the exclamation point instead of the ‘I.’ Woopsie!) I also edged the outside of these with the dabber too. I did have paper and some photo sticking off, so I took a sanding sponge and sanded the extra down. Then I reused the dabber to blend back in. I, then, mod podged the name tags on the scrapbook paper on the middle of the canvas. Last, I put a top coat on canvas which was the mod podge to give everything a final finish. Easy DIY Patriotic Crafts

Wood Letter ‘USA” Block I never thought I’d say this but I’m running out of scrap wood… These projects are draining my stash! If you’ve been following me, you may have seen my daily lives on Facebook. I have been doing many patriotic projects for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Check them out below! I started by sanding the edges of the wood for nice smooth edges. Next is a coat of paint! I chose Dixie Belle’s Cotton. If you have an old hairdryer to help dry the paint, then go right ahead but no need to, but for the sake of the video, I use a heat dryer. ? Then, I finished the edges off with a Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Paint Dauber. (I will link below.) I had these old wood letters from ages ago. I painted those red with acrylic paint and then glued the ‘S’ down first to establish the middle and then did the ‘U’ and ‘A.’ I used my hot glue gun for the glue. Stenciled ‘USA’ Wood Block On this scrap block, I painted it with Dixie Belle’s Cotton and finished the edges with Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Paint like above. This scrap block I stenciled with a stencil I got from Essential Stencil. (I will link in the Supply List.) I used Finger Paint Sponge Daubers with acrylic paint. Then to fill in the blank space, I wrapped raffia around the block into a bow and glued it down. Stenciled Patriotic Block I did this block almost exactly like the second block except I finished the edges last. You just never know how I’m going to do something! ‘USA’ Block Another woodblock… IMAGINE THAT. This ‘USA’ block I did in neutral colors for me. I absolutely love the Independence Day paper I used! First, I started with Dixie Belle Caviar Paint around the edges. Then I picked my scrapbook paper and cut it to the block size. Then comes the mod podge! Spread a whole coat on the top of the block and lay the paper down. I use a vinyl squeegee to get rid of all air bubbles and all excess mod podge underneath. These stencils are also from Essential Stencil. (linked below.) I started with the ‘S’ to establish the middle and then did the ‘U’ and ‘A.’ I used finger sponge daubers (linked below) with acrylic paint. I could have stopped there, but, of course, I had to bring the raffia out again. I wrapped the raffia around both sides and tied into bows securing with hot glue. Memorial Day Floral Arrangement On The Fly

So it’s Memorial Day weekend, and my husband comes in from working all morning.  I am working on the computer.  It’s about lunchtime, and he asks if I want to know if I want to go out to eat. He never asks if I want to go to eat somewhere…unless there is another reason.  I start thinking that maybe COVID has really gotten to him, and he just wants to go to a restaurant? Well, then it comes out that he would like to go to the cemetery on our way there or back.  Ok, it’s starting to make sense now. Oh, and “Do we have flowers to put on his Dad’s grave?”  I get up and leave the room, and he’s like, “Hey, we were talking…”.  I come back with a little pink flower arrangement that we have used before, but for his sister’s grave. So now that one is ok, we will use it for Denise, but we still need one for his Dad. I go to the garage this time and come back with 3 different containers that were handy.  And I had just happened to get in some silk flowers from Amazon last week.  I said, “If you want to, we can use these blue-ish flowers (blue was his dad’s favorite color) and put them in one of these containers.”  I had him pick the container.  Another option fitting for his dad would have been an old metal coffee container, but we would have had to empty one first, lol.  His dad used them for all kinds of storage in the shop. Then we had to come up with a way to make it stick into the ground so that it won’t be able to blow away.  We talked about a hot wire fence post, but that seemed like overkill, lol. This is what we finally landed on.  This was just a metal type can thing that I had left over from my store. We took it out to his shed and got started. First, he drilled a hole through the bottom. Then, Greg MIG welded the big metal rod to the can.  That was pretty tricky since the can is a pretty lightweight metal.  He said to please not judge his welding skills on this because this isn’t what he would typically be welding on, lol. After that, he ground down a rough spot then ran it under cold water to cool it off to be ready for me. I dried it with paper towels and then fit a couple blocks of floral foam inside the can. My plan was to hot glue them in, but once I jammed them in, it was not going to be easy to get them back out, so I left them. For the flowers, all I had to do was cut about an inch of the bush stem off to make them fit down in the can nicely.  I did add some hot glue to the stem before pushing it into the floral foam.  I don’t know if that actually helps or not, but I did it anyway. And that was just about it. I did add a new ribbon to Denise’s arrangement also.  It was just a pathetic, little satin bow that had seen better days.  I am not a bow maker, so don’t look closely, like at all, but it does look better than what it had on it.  I do plan to teach myself how to make some bows this year.  Stay tuned for that! I hope you all have a happy and safe Memorial Day Weekend!!! UPDATE: So the next day, it popped into my head that Larry’s can would have looked nice if I had stenciled “Dad” on it.  And I said it out loud.  In front of Greg.  He really, really liked that idea.  So we went back to the cemetery after lunch today with a baggie of crafting supplies to make it happen.  Give me a little slack, lol,  I stenciled it while on the ground.  I did forget to spray it with a sealer, so it is definitely not weather resistant…yet.  That will be our next trip! Desk Makeover with Fabric!

So one day I was fixin to work on this desk.  I was born in Missouri and I have a ton of southern friends so yes, I can say “fixin”, lol. Anyway…I took a picture of this naked little desk, prepped and ready to be painted.  I posted it to Facebook and asked for color suggestion. My impatient nature took hold and I started painting it gray. Almost immediately, my friend Brooke posted that she wanted it.  I didn’t take it too seriously.  People SAY they want things all the time. Then she’s texting me, “I’m serious about desk!” I proceeded to tell her that it wasn’t anything special and that it was small.  And I had other, more significant desks waiting in the wings. I gave her measurements, and she measured her spot and said the size was perfect!  She wanted the desk to be a fun pop of color.  Gray isn’t very “poppy.”  So I mentioned painting over it with her favorite aqua color and then distressing a little to let some of the gray show through.  And we talked about whitewashing it. I mentioned maybe some fun scrapbook paper or fabric on the drawer fronts to add some fun.  It just needed to have some hot pink in it to match her desk chair. That was our answer. She picked out some fabric from the Hobby Lobby and mailed it to me.  We live about 5 ½ hours away from each other. I will admit, when it arrived, it did not excite me, lol.  I don’t know how she figured this out through texting, but she could tell I didn’t love it.  And that’s fine.  I don’t have to love it.  It wasn’t for me.  That is perhaps one of the hardest things about doing customs.  I have a hard time doing a project that I don’t like.  Not that I didn’t like this one, it just didn’t light me up…at first. But I picked the pieces that had the most pink in them and it all came together for me.? And in case you were wondering about the color of gray?  Let’s just call it a custom color, lol.  I know it was a mix of a few grays I was using up at the time. And the fabric was put on with mod podge.  Mod podge on the drawer front, then the fabric, then mod podged over and then sealed with polycrylic also. In the end, I think it is adorable, just like my friend.  It fits her. Since this was for a personal friend of mine that I know fairly well, I wanted to add a special touch somewhere.  I did paint the insides of the drawers pink.  But that wasn’t quite enough. She is a big Randy Travis fan and loves his song “I Told You So”.  So…I printed off some pictures of him from the internet.  And the song lyrics.  And mod podged them into the top drawer. She will most likely never see them again after putting stuff in the drawer, but she will know “he” is there. It was so fun to do that extra special little touch for her. Brooke did a blog post about her office and it totally suits her and her personality! Go to: https://www.re-fabbed.com/office-gallery-wall/ And now that song is playing in my head. Have you ever made a piece extra special for someone? How did you do it? I would love to see a picture of it! Heck, I might even feature it here in my blog, if given permission 😉 Show me!!! Feel free to send to tammy@flippinfurniturebytammy.com  Is that not the most ridiculous email address ever or what?

Personalizing Your Furniture with Stencils

I love adding personalization to furniture, and stencils are probably my favorite way to do it! I glanced through some of my pictures from the last several years and pulled a few to give you some inspiration! I hope you enjoy them! “Home is Where your Story Begins” This is one of my most commonly used stencils for furniture.  It’s a fairly big stencil, and it makes an impact.  I have used it on so many pieces through the years and just love it.  This stencil came from The Stencilsmith.  They have a wide variety of stencils for darn near every theme you can think of!  If you happen to order from them, please tell them I sent ya! ? “And I Think To Myself, What A Wonderful World” Another larger, fun personalization can have special meaning for the person who loves to travel, or who is a fan of Louis Armstrong, or just because! Totally Random When I was working on this table, Van Halen albums came to mind!  Which led me down a number theme of other artists, including Chicago and Tommy Tutone!  And apparently, I threw in “United States of America” for good measure, lol. This was barnwood on top of a coffee table frame. Complete randomness, but apparently someone else was vibing with it because it sold in no time! French Script French script is another favorite of mine.  I love all things with script and numbers and words.  I have no idea why.  They just speak to me.  “Life is Beautiful” A little more subtle, but still adds just the right touch. Alcohol Bars I have several different alcohol stencils, and here is how I used one of them. I also add stencils to more than just furniture.  I have stenciled tons of home décor, windows, mirrors, filing cabinets, etc.  Here are a few of those, also! I hope that after seeing all these ideas, you will be inspired to “personalize” some of your projects! Stenciling isn’t hard, but it did take some practice, at least for me anyway! You can always practice on scrap wood or cardboard to get your feet wet. The first stencils it tried…I was ready to throw in the towel.  And I actually did for quite a while.  I just let them sit.  I wasn’t doing it right.  I had paint bleeds.  I would paint them too thick, the stencil shifted.  All the things. Over time I have figured out the supplies I need to make them work for me. Some stencils are less than.  The mylar may be thinner and therefore they don’t hold up very well. Sometimes the font is too skinny, and it’s hard to get the paint in there without pressing too hard and making them bleed. Once I started using pouncers and sponge dabbers, it all came together. A lot of trial and error. I won’t say I am the world’s best stenciler, but I have come a long way, baby!!! I would love to see what you create!
