DIY Memorial Gift

Hey Guys! This is Courtney, Tammy’s Daughter. I’m not much of a crafter or DIY’er like my mom, but I have done a project here and there for a gift. I love being able to give a gift with meaning and being able to put heart into it.

Although I love giving gifts, this time, it was not a fun gift because of the meaning. My boyfriend’s father passed away at the end of last year, unexpectedly. I had decided to save a rose from this casket spray for a gift to give to his grandmother. There are many different ways to preserve flowers. The way I preserve it is to just place it in the freezer. I can’t say how long it was in the freezer, maybe a few weeks? They are very fragile, so be very careful.

The shadow box I used I purchased from Hobby Lobby. I painted the shadow box black using a foam brush. Be very careful around the glass… I used scrap scrapbook paper and taped it on the outside to hopefully save it from getting paint on it. I still got some paint on the glass. No worries! Just take a razor blade against the glass, and it should peel right off.

Before this next part, take the funeral program and split it down the crease breaking in half. Then came the mod podge. Paint a layer of the mod podge on the inside, then lay down the funeral program.

Then spread another layer of mod podge on top of the program to ensure that it sticks.

You don’t have to do this next part, but I thought it would add something. My mom had some twine lying around, so I took the twine and started wrapping around the stem of the rose. When I reached the spot where I thought it looked good, I hot glued the twine to the stem.

Next, I hot glued the rose to the shadow box next to the program. I do not have a complete photo.

Side Note: I did almost this exact project 5 years ago when my grandpa passed away. I made it as a gift for my grandma for Christmas… I only did the flowers wrapped in twine and glued a cross to the shadow box.

How creative Courtney. Bless your heart for making something that can be displayed and looked at and cherished and all the memories made can be remembered.
